Your Clothes Really Do Say It For You!

This topic will not be for everyone. Most of professing Christianity will not find the wherewithal to say Amen! to the Biblical truth discussed herein. However, there will be a relative few whose love for and gratitude toward the Lord Jesus goes beyond a vocal platitude of self piety. There are a few to whom His eternal truths really are the guidelines of faith and practice and, as they learn them, these principles manifest themselves, outwardly and visibly. They are the ones who go above and beyond mere dutiful obedience to commands, to giving the Lord the desires of His heart. You see, if outward appearance made no difference to the Lord, Adam and Eve would still be dressed in the leaves of the fig tree, God’s tree, from whence they had just plucked and eaten the forbidden fruit. Instead, the Lord didn’t like what they had chosen to cover their nakedness and dressed them in clothing of His choosing.
From the Introduction: Quite often some professing Christians will defiantly say, “God looks on the inside of a person, not on the outside!” Of course, this is only a half truth. Or, they might say, “Judge not lest you be judged!” Of course, this is taken out of the contextual setting of Matthew 7, where Jesus calls upon us to make at least four judgments. Christians, trying to justify themselves or some aspect of their misbehavior, would find this offensive. The former comes from a quote in I Samuel 16:7, where Samuel was looking for Israel’s new king after the Lord rejected King Saul. Samuel was looking for a kingly-looking person and the Lord told him not to make a judgment for this important position based on outward appearance. Instead, the Lord would look upon the heart of the one He had chosen for king. “… for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” Saul’s outward disobedience was a reflection of what God saw in his heart.
In these last days when God’s people, professing fundamentalists, are teaching for doctrine the traditions of men and conforming to the world, R.S. Brewer says there is a whole army of God’s people who have wrongfully been taught that the trivial things of the pious Christian life really do not matter. This preacher maintains that just as little things matter in our relationships to our spouses and others, they matter also in our relationship to the Lord. That which allows a married couple to grow closer and more intimate are the little things, the details and the trivials. Likewise, it is the trivials, the little things, and the details that allow some Bible-believing Christians to draw closer to the Lord than others. Your clothes really do say it for you!
Yours for a closer walk with Him,
